Dear Deans and Faculty Representatives
We would like to share information with you about the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) and invite you to consider ways members of the Midwest Faculty Seminar may collaborate further with SAR.
Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of universities and colleges working to promote academic freedom and to defend the human rights of scholars worldwide. SAR members participate in a variety of ways, including by hosting scholars who have suffered violence and other threats for short-term academic positions. In return, scholars contribute to their host campuses through teaching, research, lectures and other activities.
SAR also educates the public about attacks on scholars and universities through events and other activities, including the SAR Speaker Series which brings formerly threatened scholars to member campuses to engage directly with students, faculty, alumni and the community. SAR also advocates on behalf of imprisoned scholars and undertakes research aimed at promoting understanding and respect for academic freedom and related values.
Already, some members of the Midwest Faculty Seminar have joined SAR and hosted threatened scholars from Cameroon and Swaziland. These visits were very rewarding for both the scholars as well as for the host campuses which have pledged to host again in the future.
We would be very pleased to collaborate with others members of the Midwest Faculty Seminar in the work of SAR and would invite you to encourage your institutions to consider joining the network.
We would also welcome any comments and suggestions for other ways to work together, as well as suggestions of other potential partner universities, colleges, professional associations or funding institutions.

Very truly yours,
